Beschreibung
In this second Parable for church performance, Britten sustains the influence
of the Noh tradition in Curlew River, while taking inspiration from the
Biblical story Ananias, Azarias and Misael. It tells the story of
Nebuchadnezzar and the three Israelites, Ananias, Misael and Asarias who were
thrown into a furnace for their refusal to worship Nebuchadnezzars image of
gold. The music revolves around the plainsong, Salus Aeterna, which recurs
throughout as a symbol of the Israelites integrity, and Nebuchadnezzar, the
cult of the god of gold, and the resistance of the three Israelites are given
themes of clear, contemporary significance.
Salus aeterna
Good people, in His holy name
By the Royal Command of the Great King of Kings
Great King, whom all you rule
The King commands you all To take your places
Now, let the feast begin
The waters of Babylon
Sirs, what is this?
Has your Majesty forgotten My timely warning?
Help us, Lord, help us!
By the Royal decree
O hearken, all ye people!
O King, live forever!
Is it true
O King, Nebuchadnezzar, Our God whom we serve
O all ye Works of the Lord
Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, Ye servants of the most high God
O blessed be the God
Good people, we have shown you here
