American bassist-composer Bertram Turetzky celebrated his 85th birthday on 14
February 2018. He is a pioneer of contemporary repertoire for double bass,
commissioning more than 300 works for the instrument, and is a true legend in
the double bass community. A TURETZKY TRIBUTE is an international project
bringing together composers from around the world to write a piece to
celebrate the birthday of this iconic figure in the bass world. All the works
will be published by Recital Music alongside national and international
premieres. Michal Bylina - Bertlude The composer writes: 'I have always had
much respect for modern music bassists who didn?t break with tradition and,
what?s more, performed the old classical repertoire as well. For me, one of
the finest examples of such a person is Bertram Turetzky, who not only is an
important figure in the modern history of the double bass, but also made
quite a few recordings of classical music which I cherish. The first time I
heard a haunting melody of Dragonetti?s Adagio from Solo no 8 was when I was
listening to Bert?s CD. Bertlude was premiered by David Heyes (double bass)
at Wells Cathedral School (Somerset, UK) on Sunday 4 November 2018.
?Bertlude? is a tribute from a double bassist in love with tradition to
another. It is written in the late renaissance style and echoes the music of
Valentin Bakfark, Tobias Hume and Jakub Polak. The performer here has to play
as if he played the lute, imitating polyphony, playing steady chords.'
Teppo Hauta-aho - VIVA BERT! VIVA BERT! was premiered by Alexander Heather
(double bass) at Wells Cathedral School (Somerset, UK) on Sunday 4 November
2018. David Heyes - This We Know 'This We Know' was composed on 6/7 2018
June and is based on the letters B and E from Bert and A and C from Nancy. It
flows along smoothly and simply with the musical line dictating the dynamic
range and contrasts. A more dramatic middle section, employing double stops
(4ths/5ths) interrupts the melodic line before the piece relaxes back into
the music of the opening section. The glissandos (C to B) should always be
sultry and seductive. 'This We Know' was premiered by David Heyes at the
Church of St Laurence, East Harptree (Somerset) on Saturday 9 June 2018. US
premiere on Wednesday 11 July 2018 at Texas Tech University (Lubbock, Texas)
by Bill Zauner (double bass). Australian premiere on Sunday 26 August 2018 at
Melbourne Girls? Grammar School (Melbourne) by Emma Sullivan. 'The faculty
and students absolutely loved it.' [Bill Zauner] 'Powerful and really
challenging...' [Bert Turetzky] The title is taken from the words of Chief
Seattle: This we know The earth does not belong to man, Man belongs to the
earth. This we know. All things are connected, Like the blood which unites
one family All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth, Befalls
the sons of the earth. Man did not weave the web of life, He is merely a
strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, He does to himself. Chief
Seattle (c.1780-7 June 1866), more correctly known as Seathl, was a
Susquamish chief who lived on the islands of the Puget Sound. As a young
warrior, Chief Seattle was known for his courage, daring and leadership. He
gained control of six of the local tribes and continued the friendly
relations with the local whites that had been established by his father. His
now famous speech was believed to have been given in December, 1854. The city
of Seattle is named after the Chief. Ashley John Long - Ontsindn The
composer writes: 'This work was written at the request of David Heyes as part
of a series of pieces to celebrate the 85th birthday of the great bassist
Bertram Turetzky. As Turetzky as been a very important ?gure in my life,
responsible through his seminal work ?The Contemporary Contrabass? for
awakening my interest in contemporary performance techniques which would form
not only a large part of early performance career, but my subsequent Doctoral
research, I approached the composition of this work with much pleasure.
Responsible as Bert was, for the development of many new techniques for the
instrument, I was keen that my own work should explore a only a few of these
techniques rather than too many. As harmonics became a central means by which
to expand the tessitura upwards I have explored in miniature, a variety of
ways in which these can be produced as well as a range of left hand
articulations. ?Ontsindn? is Yiddish for spark.' Ontsindn was premiered by
David Heyes (double bass) at Wells Cathedral School (Somerset, UK) on Sunday
4 November 2018. Tony Osborne - Bert's Bop! Bert's Bop! is lively and jazzy,
full of fun and good humour, and is both player and audience friendly. It was
the final work to be completed for the project and was premiered a week after
it was written. Bert's Bop! was premiered by David Heyes (double bass) at
Wells & Mendip Museum (Wells, Somerset, UK) on Saturday 9 February 2019.
