little is known about Carmine Franchi although he was believed to have been a
Neapolitan bassist (born c.1848) and lived in Monte Carlo for much of his
working life (died c.1907). He composed at least three works for double bass,
of which the Introduction & Tarantella is his most popular piece.
Introduction & Tarantella is dedicated 'A son ami Joseph Debroux' and follows
the traditional tarantella pattern of a slow, lyrical and virtuosic
introduction, followed by a fast and furious tarantella, which makes
effective use of the high harmonics. A slow section, demonstrating the
cantabile and sonorous qualities of the double bass, interrupts the flow
before the tarantella music returns ending with a lively and energetic coda
brings the music to a positive and successful conclusion.
