Dan's Story is in one extended movement and explores a wide range of modern
techniques but always within a lyrical and accessible format. A short
introduction, played pizzicato, leads into a more expansive section, played
primarily in harmonics, exploring the lyrical and ethereal soundworld in this
higher register. A cadenza contrasts music in bass clef, employing glissando,
thumb pizzicatos, double stops and harmonics in the lower orchestral range.
Dan's Story is typical of a wealth of music for unaccompanied double bass by
the legendary Finnish bassist-composer Teppo Hauta-aho. He explores and
emphasises the many tonal and timbral possibilities open to the modern
bassist, demonstrating atmospheric and evocative musical landscapes which
combine music and technical prowess in equal measure. Dan?s Story is
dedicated to Dan Styffe who premiered it on Thursday 6 June 2019 at Indiana
University, Bloomington, USA. Dan Styffe describes the Dan?s Story as ?quite
typical of Teppo?s music, but perhaps a little less jazzy in tonality and
expression than some of his other pieces. Melodic and singing phrases
contrast harmonic lines and pizzicato passages.?
