ADVANCED EDITION - Double Bass part in C minor - piano accompaniments in C
minor (orchestral tuning) and D minor (solo tuning) 'His devotion to the
mélodie spans his career, from the ever-fresh 'Le papillon et la fleur' of
1861 to the masterly cycle L'horizon chimérique, composed sixty years and
more than a hundred songs later. Fauré's songs are now core repertoire for
students and professionals, sung in conservatories and recital halls
throughout the world.' [Roy Howat/Emily Kilpatrick] Gabriel Fauré
(1845-1924) is regarded as one of the masters of the French art song, or
mélodie and in 1922 Ravel wrote that Fauré had saved French music from the
dominance of the German Lied. His melodies are beautiful, with evocative and
inventive accompaniments and are at the very heart of the song repertoire
into the 21st-century. A number of works by Fauré have been transcribed for
double bass and one of the most successful is surely the song Après un Rêve,
one of the composers most sublime creations. Trois melodies Op.7 were
composed between 1870-77, although not conceived as a set of three songs but
retrospectively collected as Op.7 in the 1890s. Après un Rêve is the first of
the set, with a text by an unknown Italian author and translated into French
by Romain Bussine (1830-99), and first published in 1878. Anne Feeney writes
'The text describes a dream in which the narrator and her beloved come
together in an almost otherworldly meeting, followed by a longing to return
to this dream state after awakening.' The gently moving accompaniment
provides a strong pulse and support above which a languid and dreamy melody
gently weaves its magic. The song is originally in the key of C minor, with
constantly changing harmonies, a sustained bass line in octaves, and a melody
line which ranges from middle C to F on the top line of the stave. The
version for double bass and piano can be played in C minor or transposed a
minor third lower into A minor with the second verse played an octave higher,
adding evocative colours to the melody line and exploiting the singing range
of the double bass. Après un Rêve has probably been arranged for more
instrumental combinations than almost any other piece and a quick search on
the internet confirms that the solo part is played by violin, viola, cello or
double bass, also flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon or horn, and is also
available for orchestra, string orchestra, string quartet, woodwind quartet,
brass quartet, saxophone quartet and even trombone and brass band. The song
lends itself to almost any instrumental combination and it is likely that
Fauré would have been amazed by its success and popularity into the
21st-century. Après un Rêve song is gem for the double bass and is playable
by the progressing young bassist and also the professional. The subtle and
sumptuous harmonies, lyrical and sinuous solo line, make this a winner every
time. David Heyes [20 May 2017]
