Richard Storry writes:'Originally written as a complete set of melodic,
evocative and progressive pieces for students, I am delighted that this
selection has been chosen for inclusion in the MTB guitar exam syllabus. As
progress is made through them I hope that students will feel that the musical
rewards from the pieces will be worth the effort of meeting the gradually
increasing technical demands, and I hope they will enjoy learning and
performing them just as much as I enjoyed composing them!' 1. Chillin? Out
During my time as a teacher, one of the things I learned was the importance
of pairing students with suitable repertoire. For instance, it would always
be tricky to persuade a 15-year-old boy to spend time learning a piece with a
title such as, ?Fragrant flowers,? or ?The Child?s Nursery?. This piece, with
its title, was an attempt to fill that gap. 2. The Grand Ball This piece
emerged when I was commissioned to write some incidental music for Chekhov?s
?Three Sisters? which ran for six months at the Playhouse Theatre in London?s
West End. During the time the play was running, at one point I was contacted
by John Williams who had been to see the play, and who told me the music was
?really lovely.? I hope you agree! 3. Three English Country Scenes This is a
set of pieces which I wrote for my talented student, Justin Hyer, who was
looking for something new to add to his repertoire. The first two movements
were inspired by memories of my childhood, growing up in the Lake District.
After these, I felt that a ?big finish? was needed so I the final, flamboyant
third movement was added. Since leaving the Royal Academy of Music
(London) with high honours and a recital diploma, in 1989, Richard Storry has
pursued a busy and successful career. Recent notable credits include the
music for Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters, starring Kristin Scott Thomas, which
was performed in London's West End and subsequently broadcast by the BBC.
Richard's music for Rumplestiltskin received over 300 performances in its
first year alone and the musical, Kennedy, was nominated three times for the
RUTAC Drama Awards. In addition to being in demand as a teacher and
adjudicator, Richard Storry's work as a composer is recognised both
nationally and internationally, including two commissions for the Hong Kong
Chinese Orchestra. His musical play The Brothers Lionheart was voted best
children's show in the 2009 Edinburgh Festival, and his first novel The
Cryptic Lines has been adapted for the stage. Richard Storry travels
worldwide as an examiner for the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools
of Music) and was recently elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Music
(ARAM).
