Programme notes by the composer 1. A Gigue for Bernard Salles My 65th
birthday present to the great Bernard Salles is based on letters from
Bernard's name (B-E-A-D-E flat) and turned into a lively and enthusiastic
gigue, which certainly wasn't my intention when I started writing. For the
last few months I have been teaching and studying a number of gigues by Bach,
Fryba, Bernard Salles and Luis Guillermo Pérez and the style, energy and
dance-feel seem to have become embedded somewhere in my brain. A Gigue for
Bernard Salles only lasts around 1'20 and should be stylish and elegant
rather than fast and virtuosic. A Gigue for Bernard Salles was premiered on
Sunday 1 September 2019 at Victoria Hall, Ash, Surrey by David Heyes (double
bass) 2. Riff-Raff Riff-Raff was composed for Raphael (Rafi), one of my
12-year old students at Wells Cathedral School and introduces a range of
playing skills to add variety and colour. The piece remains in bass clef
throughout, with the occasional harmonic to add height, and was written as
both a teaching and recital piece. It is based on four letters from Rafi's
name [A-E-D-B] and is aimed at the progressing young bassist who has a great
zest for life. 3. Scenes of Snowdonia The three-movement suite was composed
for and dedicated to my former teacher Bronwen Naish, who celebrates her 80th
birthday in 2019. She has lived in a most beautiful and secluded part of
North Wales for much of her life and all three movements are connected to
her, 1. Cwm Pennant Cwm Pennant has often been called the 'most beautiful
valley in Wales' and is bordered on three sides by mountains. The music is
inflected with quintuplets and a lyrical lilt and flow to demonstrate the
beauty of the valley. 'What a sweet and evocative morsel. I love it and will
certainly play it. Ideal for those of a certain age group who may find more
testing to stand up for more than a minute!!! It is super.' [Bronwen Naish]
Cwm Pennant was premiered on Sunday 6 June 2019 at Memorial Hall, Criccieth,
North Wales by Bronwen Naish (double bass) 2. Moel Hebog Moel Hebog is Welsh
for 'Bare Hill of the Hawk' and has a spectacular panorama over the Irish
sea and the Snowdonian mountains. Moel Hebog is the mountain which can be
seen from Bronwen Naish's cottage and the music is slow and grandiose,
lyrical and expansive, to reflect the grandeur, history and stability of this
amazing mountain. Moel Hebog was premiered on Sunday 21 July 2019 at Church
Crookham Memorla Hall, Fleet (Hants) by David Heyes (double bass) 3. Afon
Dwyfor Afon Dwfor means 'big holy river' in Welsh and flows gently through
Cwm Pennant and gathers together many streams before leaving Snowdonia
National Park. The final piec depicts the gently flowing river Afon Dwyfor as
it meaders its way through Cwm Pennant in Snowdonia. The piece is slow and
serene, hypnotic almost, with only the sound of the river and birdsong for
company. It contrasts the more powerful and expansive music of 'Moel Hebog'
and the rhapsodic nature of 'Cwm Pennant'. Afon Dwyfor was premiered on
Sunday 21 July 2019 at Church Crookham Memorial Hall, Fleet (Hants) by David
Heyes (double bass) The Joy of Understanding [Da Vinci 500] 1. La belle
ferronnière is a portrait of a lady, usually attributed to Leonardo da Vinci,
in the Louvre Abu Dhabi. It is also known as Portrait of an Unknown Woman.
The painting's title, applied as early as the seventeenth century,
identifying the sitter as the wife or daughter of an ironmonger (a
ferronnier), was said to be discreetly alluding to a reputed mistress of
Francis I of France, married to a certain Le Ferron. 'The three pieces were
written to exploit the great musicality and glorious virtuosity of my great
friend Gabriele Ragghinati. His lyrical solo playing inspired the soundworld
of each piece and 'La belle ferronnière' depicts a beautiful young woman with
a confident and direct stare into the distance. She appears assured and
determined and the music has a bold and confident narrative, exploiting a
cantabile and lyrical range of the double bass. The piece contrasts slow and
confident themes with music of a more dramatic and energetic nature, hoping
to capture the hidden thoughts and feelings of this beautiful and intriguing
young woman.' La belle ferronnière was premiered on Thursday 2 May 2019 at
Silk Mill West, Frome, Somerset by Dritan Gani (double bass) 2. La Gioconda
or the Mona Lisa has been described as 'the best known, the most visited, the
most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the
world'. The painting is a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco
del Giocondo, and is believed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506,
however, Leonardo may have continued working on it as late as 1517. It was
acquired by King Francis I of France and is now the property of the French
Republic, on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1797. 'La
Gioconda is played entirely in harmonics and the opening and recurring four
note motif represents her smile, described as enigmatic and also alluring and
aloof. The music is simple and straightforward, evocative and atmospheric,
exploring the flute-like sounds of the double bass harmonics in a lyrical and
sonorous idiom, with a gentle ebb and flow.' Mona Lisa was premiered on
Thursday 2 May 2019 at Silk Mill West, Frome, Somerset by David Heyes (double
bass) 3. The Last Supper is a late 15th-century mural painting by Italian
artist Leonardo da Vinci housed by the refectory of the Convent of Santa
Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. It is one of the western world's most
recognizable paintings. The work is presumed to have been started around
1495?96 and was commissioned as part of a plan of renovations to the church
and its convent buildings by Leonardo's patron Ludovico Sforza, Duke of
Milan. The painting represents the scene of the Last Supper of Jesus with his
apostles, as it is told in the Gospel of John, 13:21. Leonardo has depicted
the consternation that occurred among the Twelve Apostles when Jesus
announced that one of them would betray him. 'The Last Supper is slow and
solemn, almost exclusively in the key of E minor, and utilises much of the
higher register of the double bass. The opening four note motif is the basis
for much of the melodic material and the piece exploits the lyrical and
sonorous qualities of the double bass. The tempo remains constant until the
last few notes with the glorious cantabile sound of Gabriele Ragghianti
influencing the mood and style of the piece.' The Last Supper was premiered
on Sunday 5 May 2019 at Village Hall, Templecombe, Somerset by Alexander
Heather (double bass) David Heyes studied double bass with Laurence Gray and
Bronwen Naish, later at the Royal College of Music in London, and completed
his post-graduate studies in Prague with Frantisek Posta (Principal Bass,
Czech Philharmonic Orchestra). He has given recitals and masterclasses in 13
countries over the past few years and has been a juror at a number of
international competitions, twice as chairman. David has been Specialist
Double Bass Tutor at Wells Cathedral School for 20 years, alongside a
thriving and busy private teaching studio, and for a year was Contemporary
Performer-in-Residence at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
He is a founder member of Basso Bravura! (with soprano Sarah Poole),
co-founded the Bristol Bass Club and London Basses Workshops and is Artistic
Director of Bass-Fest. David's collaborative work gained him a prestigious
award from the David Walter Charitable Trust of New York for his pioneering
activities as a soloist, teacher, publisher and commissioner of new music for
double bass and he works with composers throughout the world to expand the
double bass repertoire by commissioning new music and by rediscovering
forgotten ones. Since 1990 more than 500 works have been written for him,
music from one to twenty basses and from beginner to virtuoso, and he has
premiered ten contemporary concertos with orchestra. David has transcribed
and performed a wealth of music for double bass and in recent years has
composed a number of original works which have been performed both nationally
and internationally. Six works inspired by the centenary of the First World
War have been particularly successful and his choral and vocal music has been
performed with success in Britain, Ireland and America. He composed 'Sahara'
for unaccompanied double bass as the imposed work for the 2015 Galicia Graves
Double Bass competition in Spain and returns there as Featured Composer and
guest tutor in 2017. Since 2014 David has had music performed in 24 countries
(UK, USA, Germany, Czech Republic, Mexico, Turkey, Venezuela, Australia,
Republic of Ireland, Israel, Malta, Brazil, Denmark, Ecuador, Japan, France,
Slovakia, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Austria, Spain, Guatemala and
Patagonia). In November 2016 two of his songs were recorded by Sarah Poole
(soprano) and Derek Harris (piano) for Prima Facie Records, who also recorded
an entire CD of works by David in January 2017. In 1986 David founded the
publishing company Recital Music, which now has the largest catalogue of
double bass music in the world, and has written articles and reviews for the
leading specialist magazines including The Strad, Bass News, Music Teacher,
Double Bassist, ESTA News & Views and Classical Music. David Heyes is a
D'Addario Performing Artist and has recently commissioned a solo double bass
from British master-luthier Martin Penning. '... a dazzling display of the
instrument's bel canto qualities' [Music & Musicians magazine] '...
wonderfully well played, the dazzling passage-work splendidly executed with
cheerful geniality' [Bath Chronicle] '...a sparkling performance' [Bath
Concertino) 'You are doing excellent work for the Bass World. Your students
