Beschreibung

This is the seventh of the 11 Preludes and Fugues in the Baroque Style for
double bass solo I have written to date. This set of pieces was invented to
fill the gap in the baroque era literature for the instrument, since the
double bass as such was understood generally as a continuo group instrument.
Yet, I was delighted to discover its polyphonic possibilities and that one is
actually able to play and lead different voices on it. These two factors made
me delve into the vast world of polyphony thus giving us, double bassists,
music we never had before. Prelude and Fugue no. 7 is dedicated to my dear
friend and brilliant double bassist and pedagogue, David Heyes and has strong
roots in English Baroque music. The Prelude is a piece following closely the
idea of C.F. Abel?s famous Allegro in D minor WKO 205 for bass viol solo.
Albeit the double bass doesn?t have this great number of strings, nor does it
have frets, this composition, along with the Fugue, is a very good proof that
apart from all the difficulties concerning playing such a big-sized
instrument one can imitate playing a polyphonic instrument. It was premiered
by the composer in Kraków, Poland on 12 June 2018. It?s UK premiere was by
David Heyes in Fleet, Hampshire on 21 June 2019. Programme notes by Micha?
Bylina [28.11.2019] Classical bassist, early music bassist, composer and
one of the few Viennese bass specialists, Micha? Bylina received his Bachelor
degree at the Academy of Music in Kraków with Dr. Krzysztof Firlus in 2018,
graduating with distinction. Since then he has studied with Korneel Le Compte
at Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussels, who described him as: ?Exceptionally
talented, very enthusiastic, with positive attitude. A model student in all
areas.? Micha? was awarded with distinction during the Bonawentura Nancka
Double Bass Competition (2015) and the IX International Franz Simandl Double
Bass Competition (2018). As a composer, Micha? Bylina writes mostly for the
double bass. His most important works include Preludes and Fugues, Baroque
Fantasias and Ricercars all for double bass solo. His music was recently
recognized by Bertram Turetzky, who commented: ?Thank you for all that music!
I'm overwhelmed with the quality of the music and the extent of your
productivity.? Many of his compositions have been premiered in different
countries including USA, Germany, Venezuela, Italy and Great Britain.
