The Concerto has been performed several times including the first movement in
Vilnius (Lithuania) in 2009 by Donatas Bagurskas (double bass) with the
Vinlius St.Christopher Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Prof. Donatas Katkus.
The 2nd and 3rd movements in Moscow in 2011 by Nikolay Gorbunov (double bass)
with Moscow State Conservatory Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by Felix
Korobov. The piano version of the 2nd and 3rd movements was premiered in
Moscow in 2010 by Alexander Muravyev (double bass) and Alexander Koryakin
(piano). Composer and pianist Denis Grotsky was born in Vilnius, Lithuania
in 1983 into a family of musicians and began his career as a pianist at the
age of six at a concert in Germany. From 1998 to 2004 he became the laureate
of various international piano competitions. In 2003 Denis Grotsky entered
the Gnessins' Music Academy in Moscow where he studied piano (Prof.
V.Nossina) and composition (Prof. G.Tchernov) and finished his postgraduate
studies there in 2011. During his studies Denis undertook a number of
cultural and organisational activities and from 2008 ? 2010 he was the
assistant to Mr. Juozas Budraitis, the Cultural Attaché of the Republic of
Lithuania. From 2010 ? 2011 he was the assistant to Mr. Antanas Vinkus, the
Ambassador in cultural affairs and organised more then 50 cultural events for
the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Russian Federation. In 2005
Denis composed his first advanced compositions. Two pieces for string
orchestra 'Theme and variations' and 'Introduction and Allegro' which were
performed by the Vilnius St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra conducted by Prof.
D.Katkus in the same year. In 2007 he composed a piano concerto which won 1st
Prize in the R.Shchedrin international competition in Moscow. In 2009 Denis
finished his Concerto for Double Bass and Symphony Orchestra which is highly
regarded: this composition was performed by N.Gorbunov in Moscow State
Conservatory and attracted the interest of international double bass soloists
such as Thierry Barbe (France) and Catalin Rotaru (USA). This Concerto won
the 1st Prize in the Recital Music International Composition Competition in
the United Kingdom. In December 2011 Denis Grotsky was invited as a jury
member of the International Sergei Koussevitzky competition in St. Petersburg
where his composition «Urban Movements» was an imposed work. Since 2011 he
has lived in Paris and continues his cultural activities: he gives the
masterclasses of piano and compostition, he teaches music, performs new
programmes and writes new compositions, and also writes music for films. In
late 2011 he has completed his new composition for mixed choir and symphony
orchestra.
