Dittersdorf's Concerto No.2 is one of the most popular and performed of
double bass concertos and these new cadenzas are a welcome addition to the
repertoire. Performers are at liberty to write their own cadenzas or to
perform already existing ones, and Stefano Dall'Ora has created cadenzas for
the first two movements which are exciting and idiomatic. They offer musical
and technical challenges, demonstrate the entire range of the double bass and
contrast the music of the original concerto and adding a wealth of colours
and timbres for the adventurous solo bassist. Stefano Dall'Ora writes: 'All
the well-known cadenzas for the first two movements of Dittersdorf's Double
Bass Concerto No.2 have never really convinced me. I find them either too
long and pretentious for such a light, 'Stile Galante' classical piece or, in
some other cases, they are not focused enough on the original musical
material and tend to stray off the path, as it were. I've always thought that
a good cadenza, just as any well-conceived improvisational form, should be a
small composition in itself, describing a logical arc including a beginning,
an evolution and an end - the beautiful example of Mozart's Violin Concertos
spring to mind, si parva licet... In each of these two cadenzas of mine I
decided to stay in the 2-3 minute time boundary, I chose to stick to the
original themes and passages written by Dittersdorf as far as I could, and
tried to explore some of the possibilities they offered me such as harmonic
variations, dynamic contrasts and two-voice polyphonic passages. Both
cadenzas are quite virtuosic and need to be studied and practiced with care,
paying a special attention to phrasing, dynamics and the correct intonation
of double stops. Nevertheless I believe that any technical difficulties can
be overcome by means of a constant application: over time these cadenzas will
surely become more and more musically rewarding for the performer and the
listener alike.' Born in Varese, Italy Italian double bassist Stefano
Dall'Ora has had a busy career as a performer and recording artist covering
the spectrum from classical music to jazz. He graduated in 1982 with full
marks from the prestigious Conservatorio 'Giuseppe Verdi' di Milano under the
guidance of Giuseppe Russotto, and later with Franco Petracchi in Fiesole,
Italy. He has appeared as Principal Bass with a number of symphony and
chamber orchestras such as the Orchestra da Camera di Brescia, Orchestra
Sinfonica Haydn di Bolzano e Trento and Orchestra del Pomeriggi Musicali di
Milano and has worked in many countries with leading soloists such as
Mstislav Rostropovic, Gidon Kremere and Krystian Zimerman. Stefan Dall'Ora
has performed twice at Carnegie Hall (New York) with the Origines Trio
(voice, classical guitar, double bass). He is a member of the Arke String
Quartet and in 2007 they recorded, with the famed Indian percussionist,
Trilok Gurtu, the CD 'Arkeology' which was voted one of the best World Music
recordings of the year by several international music magazines. Stefano
Dall'Ora currently teaches double bass at the Conservatorio 'Giuseppe Verdi'
di Como.
