David Heyes writes:'Sahara is dedicated to Simón García and was composed as
an imposed work for the 2015 Galicia Graves Double Bass Competition (March
2015), held in Culleredo, Spain. The piece lasts around five minutes and
explores the many colours and timbres of the double bass, primarily in the
lower register. It describes the ever-changing landscapes of the desert, the
extremes of temperature, alongside the exotic travels of the nomadic people
and their animals. Most of its landscape has been shaped over time by wind
and includes sand dunes, sand seas called ergs, barren stone plateaus, gravel
plains, dry valleys and salt flats. Due to the high temperatures and arid
conditions of the plant life in the Sahara Desert is sparse and consists
mainly of drought and heat resistant varieties and those adapted to salty
conditions where there is sufficient moisture. The harsh conditions have also
played a role in the presence of animal life and in the central and driest
part of the desert there are around 70 different animal species including the
spotted hyena, sand fox, sand viper and the monitor lizard. It was composed
to offer the players an opportunity to develop an awareness of musical line
and narrative, with the many sounds and effects available to the 21st-century
bassist but always within a lyrical and musical framework.' 'Sahara is a
gem' (Bert Turetzky) 'I so love and loved playing this piece !' (P Kellach
Waddle, USA) 'Great piece for Galicia Graves International Competition! Good
music and amazing piece for the students!!' (Simon Garcia) 'It's a wonderful
little piece !!!!!!! I love it !!' (P Kellach Waddle) Sahara was premiered
at St. Stephen's Church, Bristol on Monday 23 February 2015 by David Heyes.
Sahara was given its US premiere on Sunday 21 June 2015 at the Museum of
Making Music (Carlsbad, California) by Bertram Turetzky. David Heyes
studied double bass with Laurence Gray and Bronwen Naish and later at the
Royal College of Music in London. He completed his post-graduate studies in
Prague with Frantisek Posta (Principal Double Bass, Czech Philharmonic
Orchestra). He has given recitals and masterclasses in 13 countries over the
past few years and has been a juror at a number of international
competitions, twice as chairman. David has been Specialist Double Bass Tutor
at Wells Cathedral School for 17 years and received a prestigious award from
the David Walter Charitable Trust of New York for his pioneering activities
as a soloist, teacher, publisher and commissioner of new music for double
bass. He works with composers throughout the world and is particularly
interested to expand the double bass repertoire, by commissioning new works
and by rediscovering forgotten ones. Over the past 30 years he has
commissioned more than 500 works, from beginner to virtuoso, and from one to
twenty basses. David has transcribed more than 200 works for double bass,
many published by Recital Music, and in recent year has also composed a
number of original works for double bass which have been performed in
Britain, America and Czech Republic. David is self-taught as a composer and
his music has been described as lyrical and accessible, but certainly of the
21st-century.
