Impressions 2 is a collection of short pieces for unaccompanied double bass
and each composed for a friend of the composer. A range of moods, styles and
idioms are used to demonstrate the many and varied possibilities of the solo
double bass. Each piece has been performed many times, in various countries,
none lasting more than two minutes. They can be played individually, or as a
group and in any order, and are part of a growing body of double bass music
by David Heyes. By the end of 2016 his music had been played in 11 countries.
1. Moonshine was commissioned by P Kellach Waddle in Texas, to whom it is
dedicated, with the brief of a work lasting about 90 seconds and with a
'beverage theme' for a concert in July 2016. Moonshine is one name used to
describe a high-proof distilled spirit, usually produced illicitly. There are
several explanations about the word 'moonshine' which is believed to be
derived from the term 'moonrakers' used for early English smugglers and the
clandestine nature of the operations of illegal Appalachian distillers, or
because it was mostly distilled at night 'by the light of the moon'. This
short piece contrasts episodes of slow reflection, probably with the aid of
some local homebrew, with fast and frenetic music describing the excitement
and thrill of the chase, or the enjoyment of drinking moonshine with friends.
Will the moonshiners and their stills be found? Can they evade the
authorities? A recurring rhythmic figure adds energy and momentum,
occasionally interrupted with short interjections played sul ponticello, to
describe a slight inebriation. A slow and relaxed lyrical phrase, also
playable with portamenti, adds a moment of repose before the chase resumes
ending with drama and finality. Were the moonshiners found? Probably not...
'OMG I love it !!! what a hoot !! : ... I wouldn't have imagined moonshine
would be prestissimo .. but I LOVE when my own idea is subverted... love it
.. this is a wonderful little piece and I have decided instead of 2nd to last
.. It will be the LAST of the 11 piece set of yours I shall do on that late
July concert !! thank you so much !! :' [P Kellach Waddle] Moonshine was
premiered on Tuesday 27 September 2016 at the Salon de usos multiples,
Bibliotca de las artes, Mexico City by Marco Antonio Quiñones Martinez. 2.
The Water of Life - 'No visit to Scotland would be complete without sampling
a ?wee dram? of uisge beatha or ?the water of life? ?the name given by the
ancient Celts to the fiery amber nectar we now call Scotch whisky.' The Water
of Life was commissioned by my good friend Kel (P Kellach Waddle) in Austin,
Texas.. The piece is dedicated to him and he requested a 'beverage-themed'
piece for unaccompanied double bass and lasting around 90 seconds. It took
quite a long time to settle on whisky as the theme but once the title was
decided it was so much easier to focus on the commission. A four-bar
introduction, played slowly and with a hint of the bagpipes and their drone,
sets a solemn mood before the dance begins and its reel or jig-like
influences are scattered frequently with the 'scotch-snap'. The exotic and
atmospheric sound of sul ponticello contrasts a smooth and lyrical melodic
approach with the melodic phrases repeated and developed. The music is
probably more Celtic than particularly Scottish or Irish, but whatever the
result the smooth amber liquid known as whisky or whiskey is still 'the water
of life'. Good health! The Water of Life was premiered on Tuesday 27
September 2016 at the Salon de usos multiples, Bibliotca de las artes, Mexico
City by Marco Antonio Quiñones Martinez. 3. Aarni (Guardian of Hidden
Treasures) 'Aarni is the guardian of hidden treasures' -Kalevala Preface
(Crawford 1888) Aarni (Guardian of Hidden Treasures) is the ninth work of
'Finnish Sketches' composed for Teppo-Fest 2016 to celebrate the 75th
birthday of the great Finnish bassist-composer Teppo Hauta-aho. Hidden
treasures are a recurring theme in the Kalevala and this piece, lasting
around a minute, celebrates the lyrical and cantabile qualities of the solo
double bass - a hidden treasure possibly. A recurring six note figure or
motif acts as a unifying factor, often prefacing a more lyrical and prominent
episode, and the emphasis is on lyricism, almost a song without words,
gradually dying away to a three note pizzicato coda with a slow glissando
which fades away into the mists of time. It was premiered on Wednesday 20
April 2016 at the Bristol BASS CLUB (Bristol, UK) by the composer and
received its Mexican premiere by its dedicatee Marco Antonio Quinones
Martinez in Mexico City on 15 July 2016. 4. We are such stuff As dreams are
made on... Composed on 26/27 May 2016, this one-minute piece employs a range
of colours and textures to create the magical and mystical world of Prospero
and his mythical island from William Shakespeare's The Tempest. The music has
a gentle simplicity, beginning and ending with open fifths, played pizzicato,
contrasting lyrical arco melodies which explore the sonorous lower register
of the instrument. The addition of pizzicato, col legno and a repetitive high
D harmonic, display many of the possibilities of the solo double bass but
always within a lyrical and melodic framework. 'Very nice. Bravo!' (Teppo
Hauta-aho) 5. Tuonela - The tenth piece in the Finnish Sketches series for
unaccompanied double bass by David Heyes. All last around a minute in length
but 'Tuonela', played pizzicato throughout, is almost two minutes in
duration. The music has a stillness and serenity, with it's insistent open A
string drone, above which the slow moving musical motifs and snatches of
melody move the piece slowly forward to its simple and unaffected conclusion.
Played slowly and with the same dynamic throughout, Tuonela evokes a dark and
forbidding place with music of gentle momentum and clarity. Tuonela is the
realm of the dead or the Underworld in Finnish mythology. According to
ancient beliefs the fate of good and bad people is the same and the dead
wander the afterlife as shadow-like ghosts. Tuoni and his wife Tuonetar are
the rulers of Tuonela. At times living people visited Tuonela to gather
information and spells. The trip there required weeks of trekking in a
desert, and finally the crossing of the river with the help of a ferryman
(similar to Charon in Greek mythology). Shamans could visit Tuonela by
falling into a trance and tricking the guards. 'I loved the two pieces you
played tonight 'Tuonela - Land of the Dead' totally took me away...' James
Rintoul Tuonela was premiered by David Heyes on 22 June 2016 at Bristol
Plays Music (Bristol, UK) and received it's Mexican premiere in Mexico City
on Friday 15 July 2016 by Marco Antonio Quiñones Martinez. David Heyes
studied double bass with Laurence Gray and Bronwen Naish and later at the
Royal College of Music in London. He completed his post-graduate studies in
Prague with Frantisek Posta (Principal Double Bass, Czech Philharmonic
Orchestra). He has given recitals and masterclasses in 13 countries over the
past few years and has been a juror at a number of international
competitions, twice as chairman. David has been Specialist Double Bass Tutor
at Wells Cathedral School for 19 years and received a prestigious award from
the David Walter Charitable Trust of New York for his pioneering activities
as a soloist, teacher, publisher and commissioner of new music for double
bass. He works with composers throughout the world and is particularly
interested to expand the double bass repertoire, by commissioning new works
and by rediscovering forgotten ones. Over the past 30 years he has
commissioned more than 500 works, from beginner to virtuoso, and from one to
twenty basses. David has transcribed more than 200 works for double bass,
many published by Recital Music, and in recent year has also composed a
number of original works for double bass which have been performed in
Britain, America, Venezuela, Turkey, Spain, Mexico, Germany and Czech
Republic. David is self-taught as a composer and his music has been described
as lyrical, evocative and accessible, but certainly of the 21st-century.
