David Heyes writes: 'ILMARINEN (pronounced - IL- MAH - REE - NEN) is the
eleventh of my Finnish Sketches for unaccompanied double bass and is
dedicated to my friend Jason Heath in America - one of the most active and
innovative bassists in the international bass world today. The first nine
pieces last around a minute each, the tenth (composed for the great Dritan
Gani) is 1'30 and this piece is the longest at 4'10. The first eight sketches
were composed for Teppo-Fest 2016 to celebrate the 75th birthday of Teppo
Hauta-aho in May 2016. The work is atmospheric and evocative, based on
letters from Jason's name (A - E flat/D sharp - B - E), and employs a wide
range of colours and effects. Primarily in the orchestral register of the
instrument but with the occasional foray into the solo register, the very
highest harmonics create an ethereal effect which contrasts music of a more
direct and sonorous character. A repeated semiquaver (16th note) figure could
depict the eternal hammering of this legendary character or simply the gentle
moving of time and space. ILMARINEN is a character from the Finnish Kalevala
and is usually described as 'the maker of heaven and woker of metals'. 'He's
a smith extraordinary, The most skillful of all craftsmen, Who hammered out
the vault of heaven, Forged the sky-lid there above us Without leaving mark
of hammer Or a trace of tongs upon it.' -Runo 'Väinämöinen's Promise'
'Ilmarinen had been born, Born and grown to manhood too, Born upon a hill of
charcoal, Grew up on a cindery heathland, In one hand a copper hammer, In the
other his tiny tongs.' - Runo 9 Also described as a 'spirit of air', his
creations include the legendary Sampo, also a woman made of gold and silver,
a rake to retrieve Lemminkäinen's body, a kantele (five-stringed harp), and
even creates men and women. He was the one to subdue iron and first forged
with steel.' 'I would like to congratulate you for your piece, I had a lot
of fun working on it!' [José Trigo] 'Ilmarinen is so beautiful and powerful
- when I played it at my recital, several people begged to play it! It's just
too beautiful!' [Susan Hagen/Boston Pops Orchestra, USA] Ilmarinen was
premiered by the composer on Sunday 23 October 2016 at James Allen's Girls
School, Dulwich (UK). Territory premieres include: Venezuela (Friday 9

and later at the Royal College of Music in London. He completed his
post-graduate studies in Prague with Frantisek Posta (Principal Double Bass,
Czech Philharmonic Orchestra). He has given recitals and masterclasses in 13
countries over the past few years and has been a juror at a number of
international competitions, twice as chairman. David has been Specialist
Double Bass Tutor at Wells Cathedral School for 19 years and received a
prestigious award from the David Walter Charitable Trust of New York for his
pioneering activities as a soloist, teacher, publisher and commissioner of
new music for double bass. He works with composers throughout the world and
is particularly interested to expand the double bass repertoire, by
commissioning new works and by rediscovering forgotten ones. Over the past 30
years he has commissioned more than 500 works, from beginner to virtuoso, and
from one to twenty basses. David has transcribed more than 200 works for
double bass, many published by Recital Music, and in recent year has also
composed a number of original works for double bass which have been performed
in Britain, America, Venezuela, Turkey, Spain, Mexico, Germany and Czech
Republic. David is self-taught as a composer and his music has been described
as lyrical, evocative and accessible, but certainly of the 21st-century. See
