Beschreibung
Finnish composer-bassist Teppo Hauta-aho is the most prolific and productive
composer in the history of the double bass. A Tribute to Frantisek was
composed for Posta 100, an initiative by David Heyes to commission 100
one-minute pieces for solo double bass to celebrate the centenary of the
birth of the great Czech virtuoso Frantisek Posta (1919-1991) in 2019. Teppo
and David studied with Frantisek Posta in Prague, Teppo in the 1960s and
David in the 1980s, and have collaborated on other works in memory of their
teacher since his death in 1991. Posta 100 will include 99 one-minute pieces
culminating Teppo Hauta-aho's A Tribute to Frantisek, which lasts around four
minutes, and is the only work in the project which was allowed to overrun the
specified time limit. The three-page work is dedicated to 'David Heyes and
the Bass World' and offers many musical and technical challenges within a
musical and accessible framework. Great use is made of the harmonic range of
the double bass, both pizzicato and arco, aloowing the double bass to create
a magical atmosphere in the higher registers. This contrasts music of a more
direct and dramatic nature, employing pizzicato double stops, mainly 3rds,
4ths and 5ths, alongside subtle glissandi and false harmonics played in the
lower positions. A final section features pizzicato octave chords, ringing
harmonics and an effective use of the possibilities of the solo double bass.
A Tribute to Frantisek is inventive, evocative and always interesting, full
of great music and challenges, and a perfect ending to Posta 100. A Tribute
to Posta was premiered by David Heyes (double bass) at Trumpington Hall
(Cambridge) on Sunday 18 February 2018.
